Further unlike WSL surf contests, which have a 10-point ride at the top of the scoring scale, the Backdoor Shootout recognizes that there needs to be room for those extra-throaty barrels, and therefore adjusts the scale to include 12-point spitters. It begins with eight teams of four before whittling down to the finals. The Da Hui Backdoor Shootout offers a unique take on the Pipeline surf contest concept. This is spectacular from a spectator perspective, so plan your days on the North Shore accordingly. The WSL has slotted the WSL Championship Tour event into the tail end of January, which typically equates better swell and ultimately bigger and more consequential waves. As far as we’re concerned the more Pipeline, the better. This is different from the new VANS Pipe Masters event that has been added to the schedule for December 2023. Billabong Pro Pipeline WSL Championship Tour Event While it can be hard to plan a trip to the North Shore when a contest is solely dependent upon Mother Nature, you should check out the Opening Ceremony which is held on the first day of the contest waiting period. In doing so, the event also celebrates the current lineage of big wave surfers. That’s why the contest is only held when waves reach a height of 30-feet (Hawaiian) and when conditions allow. For all that Eddie had accomplished on this earth, he was perhaps best known for braving Waimea Bay waves in excess of 30 feet or more, when no one else would go out. The Eddie Big Wave Invitational honors the life of Eddie Aikau, a champion, lifeguard (who saved over 500 people), a waterman, and a ohana-man who ultimately gave his life to save others. The “Eddie” is the most meaningful of all surf contests. When: December 1 to February 28 (each year) image: Image: The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational Regardless, we’ll leave the listing here as it is, in the hope that it will become a part of the North Shore surf competitions agenda one day. Given the shake-up of late, we don’t think it will be back to what it was. Will we ever see a return to the iconic VANS Triple Crown of Surfing? The month-long event traditionally includes the Hawaiian Pro at Ali’i Beach, the VANS World Cup at Sunset Beach, and the Billabong Pipe Masters. We’re leaving this here on the schedule as we expect a Haleiwa event to return in some shape or form for the 2024 season. *The WSL has cancelled the Haleiwa Challenger for 2023. The series’ season will wrap in Haleiwa towards the end of November and into December each year. That being said, do you have a better way to spend the day on the island than by watching local wave warriors battle it out at one of the most iconic surf spots on the planet? Haleiwa Challenger (Cancelled for 2023)Īfter the events of 2020-21 forever altered the surf contest schedule, the WSL announced (July 2021) the Challenger Series. Consequently, there won’t be many “big” names in the competition when compared to the others on this itinerary of North Shore surf contests. The Sunset Pro is a World Surf League Qualifying Series event.
